Loew’s Jersey Theatre:
Bold Grandeur: A Dynamic Brand Rebirth
STRATEGIC POSITIONING | VISUAL STRATEGY | BRAND IDENTITY DESIGN
Smith Design partnered with Loew’s Jersey Theatre to evolve a brand identity that had carried nearly a century of history. The goal was to honor that legacy while creating a contemporary expression that feels relevant to today’s audiences and positions the theatre for its next chapter.

Honoring the Past to Position What's Next
Our team began with a thorough audit of Loew’s Jersey Theatre’s history, architecture, programming, and audience, paired with research on historic venue revitalization and live entertainment audience behavior. This included a brainstorming workshop session with the HBSE team, laying the groundwork for a new brand positioning along with a visual and verbal strategy to guide the brand into its newly imagined launch. Rather than pursuing historical recreation, the strategy focused on capturing the spirit of the original and translating it into a contemporary visual language, one that speaks to both longtime community members and newer attendees discovering the theatre for the first time.
Pulling a Brand From the Details
Design exploration centered on translating the building’s distinct architectural details into a modern mark, rather than replicating them outright. The resulting logo balances familiarity with fresh execution, while custom patterns and graphic elements pull from decorative motifs found throughout the venue, giving the system a point of view that feels both original and fresh.
A Framework for Every Format
Because the Loew’s Jersey Theatre identity needed to flex across everything from signage to digital campaigns to event collateral, guidelines were built around the custom patterns, typography, and brand mark developed for the theatre, showing how each element adapts without losing its connection to the venue’s architectural character. The result is a system built for the range of programming the venue hosts, from film screenings to live performances to community events.
Extending the Experience, On and Offline
From ticket stubs to posters to program guides, the identity was applied across the everyday materials that shape an audience’s experience with the theatre, extending into digital activations such as social content and web presence. These touchpoints give visitors a consistent sense of place, whether they’re planning a visit online or holding a piece of paper in hand at the box office.
OUTCOME
Majestic Reinvention with a Nod to Heritage
Loew’s Jersey Theatre now carries a unified look and feel that honors its 1929 origins while speaking clearly to today’s audiences. The new system reframes the theatre not just as a historic landmark, but as an active, working venue, one built to support the live performances, screenings, and community events that will define its next chapter, and to help drive Jersey City’s continued growth as an arts destination.
